Climate KIC: co-creation for climate storytelling

Climate KIC is Europe’s leading climate innovation agency. We managed a co-creation project showcasing the impact of its partnership with Salesforce Foundation.

Climate KIC works around the world to create climate-resilient societies and fight the climate breakdown by funding and supporting startups, scale-ups, and innovation projects. Their partnership with Salesforce Foundation supported six women-led entrepreneurship support organisations (ESOs) in Latin America and Africa with grants and training.

Our brief was to lead a co-creation project that resulted in six films that communicated the impact of the Climate KIC Salesforce Foundation partnership.  Each film needed to show the unique work the organisation was implementing locally but together they needed to work as a coherent set of content. The films needed to communicate climate innovation to new audiences in a simple engaging way.

“These ESOs work on their own programs but they’re part of the same goal we have to strengthen the ecosystem for climate innovation. But sometimes it can be a bit difficult to explain to an audience that it is less familiar with the climate innovation space what this actually means. We decided to give these organisations the skills and the space they needed to tell their story and explain their work in a way that made it more visible and concrete.” Eva Ros. Project Manager.

For many of the organisations, this was the first time doing this type of content creation so we started with a workshop that helped them to develop skills in filmmaking and learn about the process of storyboarding and planning a film. They then went into the field to shoot their films. Throughout the filming window we provided ongoing feedback and mentoring to help them capture the most powerful and engaging content. We edited the six films to create a set that had a consistent look and feel.

“We work on very complex projects, and we have very tight timelines so onboarding an external partner can be a challenge. For me it was super helpful that Mile 91 was happy to jump in and start working on something that was still in a very conceptual phase. We were really looking to grab the attention of an audience that we might not normally engage with, and you brought in a lot of creative ideas.”

The first of the six films was published on International Women’s Day 2025, and the series was rolled out over the subsequent two months. Individually the films tell the story of specific projects and provide the partner organisation with a valuable resource for local engagement activity. As a set they help Climate KIC to showcase the wider impact of their work to support the development of strong and sustainable climate innovation organisations.

“Often at Climate KIC we have large in-depth pieces which require the audience to be engaged for a longer time. These videos capture attention straight away and showcase a lot in a very short timeframe. In the future if we what to show partners or stakeholders in the ecosystem what we do with ESOs then this content is something that we would definitely point them to.

“I would definitely recommend working with Mile 91. It was a really personal approach, the creative process was really thought-through, and the suggestions spot on, and they were really eager to work with feedback. Having a partner that can really work with you instead of in isolation was really helpful.”
